Homemade Vanilla Extract

I have fun each holiday season making homemade gifts for friends, teachers, neighbors and anyone else I need to give a holiday gift to.  This one is so easy to make, and I have fun finding creative bottles to use and best of all making creative tags to attach.

Plan ahead if you plan to use these as holiday gifts.

Per bottle you will need –

2 Vanilla Beans

2 Cups Vodka, plus additional to top off your bottle.

Make sure to get a bottle you can cork closed. These can be found at your dollar stores, big box retailers and even thrift stores.

Directions

Using a sharp knife, cut the vanilla bean lengthwise down the center, leaving the ends intact.  Insert 2 vanilla beans into your bottle.  Cover with vodka making sure the beans are completely covered.  Store bottles in a cool, dry, dark place.  Gently shake the bottles weekly for the first month.  Top off with additional vodka at this point if needed.  Mixture will darken over time.  The mixture is ready  when the smell of vodka is replaced with a soft vanilla scent.  Approximately 2 months. Make sure to mark on the bottle when ready.
